Conversations with a Five Year Old — 1

This morning my son noticed the older kids getting on the bus to go to school. It’s the same bus that carries him off a few hours later to his afternoon kindergarten class. As I type this I’ve had to stop for hugs, and to comfort him that he will be going to school, just not right this minute. Here’s how our conversation went a few minutes ago.

Michael: Noticing the kids waiting at the bus stop. “Mom, I’ve got to go to school.”
Me: “You will, at 11:30, right now it’s time for the older kids who go to school all day to get on the bus. You’ll see them when you ride home this afternoon.“
Michael: “But…but, what if the children need me?”
Me: “I think they’ll be O.K.“
Michael: “But.…but.…I just want to go to school.”

We’re still going around in circles…and will for a few more minutes I’m sure.

Sigh.…
